...My vision problem reminds me of a verse in the Bible. In 1 Corinthians 13:12 God tells us that we, as people, see things through a glass darkly. To me, that sounds like defective vision. God is telling us that the way people of this world, and even Christians sometimes, see truth, life, each other, and even God through blurred and imperfect vision. Yet, all around us, we hear people speak their opinions as if they have perfect knowledge and perfect vision. They are quick to tell us that we are not living up to a standard that they or someone else has set. They can be so convinced of their ability to see things clearly that they are willing to even bet their eternal future on it. Yet, if we are honest with ourselves, we all make mistakes in our choices, actions and decisions every day. If we trust our hearts into the hands of flawed and fallible people, which we all are, we are deceiving ourselves and falling short of the freedom, joy, and wholeness that God has planned for us as His children.

Before I was fitted for my first pair of glasses, I had no idea that I couldn't see. I thought that my vision was normal and was what everyone experienced. I didn't know what I was missing. But then, the doctor put those glasses on my face and everything came into focus for the first time. The same is true in the spiritual realm. If we go through life trusting in our blurry concept of who God is and how life should be lived, we are walking blindly and in danger of injury or death. The enemy of our souls wants us to remain blind. He wants us to stay in bondage to rules, religion, and people pleasing. But God has so much more that He intends for our lives. He wants to give us 'spiritual glasses'.

I Corinthians 13:12 tells us “2 For now we see through a glass, darkly; but then face to face: now I know in part; but then shall I know even as also I am known.” God wants to correct our vision so that we can live our lives without bumping into things and making messes wherever we go. He gives us a glass that, when we look into it, we are enabled to see clearly for the first time. That glass is His Word.

I challenge you to pick up the Bible and make it a necessity for your life. Read the truth about God, the world, and yourself. No longer believe the lies that are keeping you from seeing clearly. Ask yourself, “Do I really want to see or am I content to wander through life with blurry vision?” If you put on your spiritual glasses, know that you may be mocked by others who are stumbling around in the dark. But do it anyway, and know that you will never see life in the same way again.-Debra Banna
